Benefits of Stainless Steel
Most high-end hardware is made from brass, a material that provides an excellent base for finishing. Brass finishes are more durable than those applied to zinc, and they often look better too. Due to its remarkable malleability, brass is ideal for creating ornate details such as coined edges, knurling, and beading. Brass can be found in two forms: lacquered and unlacquered, each with its own benefits. Unlacquered brass is considered a “living finish” and will age and tarnish over time, developing a graceful patina that adds character to the hardware. On the other hand, lacquered brass resists tarnishing, though over time—or if exposed to harsh air—the lacquer may chip or flake off, revealing the underlying finish and allowing it to tarnish. Generally, lacquered brass fares well indoors and outdoors, as long as it’s not near coastal areas. Alternatively, some manufacturers offer PVD or lifetime finishes, which undergo a high-tech process that creates a highly durable coating, providing enhanced longevity and resistance.

In recent years, hardware made from zinc alloys has gained popularity due to its cost-effectiveness compared to other metals. While zinc alloy hardware offers an affordable option, the quality can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, with some pieces appearing better than others. Typically, the price of the hardware is reflective of its quality and overall appearance.
